For the third year running, Leamington Library was invaded by superheroes for Free Comic Book Day! The excitement was building from the moment that I donned my X Men t-shirt and walked into the library to see all the free comics covering the tables. As a comic book fan for years, I love the event and have been looking forward to it for months. This year, I decided to find out the favourite comic book villain – turns out to be The Joker- and who would win in fierce battles between different Marvel and DC comic characters. The Flash beat Quicksilver; Hawkeye beat Green Arrow; Wonder Woman beat Storm; and Thor beat Superman (who saw that coming? Not me!). The trail through the library had people hunting high and low for heroes, with some of them very cunningly hidden. Hundreds of comics were given away free by Spa Town Comics, and they also donated some for the goody bag for the prize draw.
We held two workshops over the day, ‘Comic Book Talk’ with Rees Finlay and kids could create their own monsters with Darrell Thorpe.
Also showcased was the extensive range of graphic novels we have for loan at Leamington Library.
James Webb was a very happy winner of the goody bag for doing the Superhero Trail.
Staff and customers got into the spirit of the event sporting t-shirts and dresses inspired by comics ready to do battle with evil doers. With an extra 250 people through the doors, hundreds of votes cast and trails filled in, the library was buzzing with the fun and excitement of the day.
Warwickshire Libraries host a range of events suitable for all ages throughout the year. Check out our Events page to find out more.
