We hosted our Year 4 Reading Celebration Final Events across Warwickshire at the end of March 2017.

 

This is the first year we have run this event and it has been a great success!

 

This was a joint initiative run by Warwickshire Schools Library Service (WSLS) and Warwickshire Libraries. This initiative was open to all schools across Warwickshire, including those that do not currently subscribe to WSLS.

 

The Year 4 Reading Celebration was designed to encourage Year 4 pupils to read for pleasure and use their local libraries. Evidence indicates that pupils who can read well are more likely to succeed and schools, libraries and families all have a crucial role to play in fostering a love of reading.

 

All Year 4 pupils at participating schools were asked to borrow and read four books from their local library and write their thoughts about the books in a specially designed Reading Log. The class were also asked to prepare a Creative Response to their reading. The teachers then selected 4 pupils to attend the Final Celebration event in their area and compete against other schools in fun book related quizzes. The final events have taken place at Warwickshire Libraries, WSLS and Bridgetown Primary School. The winning team in each area have received a trophy for their schools, medals for the team members and goody bags to take home with them.

 

We have been thrilled by the quality and amount of work that pupils have put into their Creative Responses. They have been exceptional and a credit to their schools. We have really enjoyed seeing all their creations and we sense how much it has shown them the power of books to transport them to all kinds of other worlds and widen their thinking and creativity.

 

Following the success of this year, we hope to run the Year 4 Reading Celebration again next year and encourage, engage and inspire more children to love reading and to use their local libraries.

Bridgetown Primary School: Alveston Church of England Primary, Stratford Upon Avon

Alcester Library: Shipston on Stour Primary School, Shipston on Stour

Bedworth Library: Wheelwright Lane Primary School
